A true 10mm ISO4565 Standard Short Link Anchor chain with Solid Zinc finish made by MF in ItalyThis is a Grade 40 chain - more about Grades and what they can tell you can be found here.While the guts of this chain is equally as good as the HDG finished version this one features MF's Solid Zinc Technology.To make a pretty complex and boring description of it all less painful to put it simply Solid Zinc is a far higher grade coating that gives longer protection to the chain than most of the Hot Dipped Galvanised coating now they have been tweaked for climate change. Basically the traditional coatings have been reduced in effectiveness due to removing bits that aren't that good for the planet so this is where Solid Zinc kicks in. Not only does it replace HDG it works better for a lot longer and all the while is nicer for our favourite and only environment.While the Solid Zinc coated chain does cost a little more to buy in the first place it is actually better value when you look at the life time cost of it. As many have found out when purchasing chains from the east the initial price can be OK but by the time you add in a re-galvanising the chain suddenly becomes far more expensive than buying a good one to start with. That's why the smart boaters think 'Lifetime cost' not 'purchase price', it saves them lots of money. So when you use Solid Zinc finish you get a huge number more years of use before having to regalvanise over chains from the east you also get a lot more over traditional HDG.What's even cooler is the Solid Zinc finish is pure sex, as that is described in the 'Chainland Dictionary'. The finish makes the chain appear as if it is Stainless Steel. Above is a photo of some bulk chain, I took that here in NZ just before we all got put in Corona Jail. It is flash, literally if you're in the sun, watch for that. So not only many years extra life it also look very pretty.
